Wild Dolphin Encounters in the Algarve — What to Expect on a Sailing Charter
"Navigating The Future"
Few experiences on the water compare to the moment a pod of dolphins appears alongside the bow. For guests aboard Ocean Breeze, it is one of those unscripted moments that turns a great charter into an unforgettable one.
After 25 years sailing the waters between Lagos and Sagres, skipper Rob Pels has learned that the Algarve coastline holds some of the most reliable dolphin habitat on Portugal's Atlantic coast — and that the best way to encounter them is not from a crowded tour boat, but from a sailing yacht moving quietly through open water.
Which Dolphins Will You See?
The waters west of Lagos Marina are home to two resident dolphin species. Common dolphins are the most frequently encountered — highly sociable, fast-moving and acrobatic, they are the species most likely to approach a sailing yacht and ride the bow wave. Bottlenose dolphins are also present, typically in smaller groups and often closer inshore.
In rarer conditions, other species pass through. In 2025, Ocean Breeze encountered a group of Risso's dolphins — a deep-water species distinguished by their grey, scarred skin and rounded heads — an uncommon sighting even for experienced sailors on this coast.
Where Are They Found?
The stretch of open Atlantic between Lagos and Sagres is the most productive area for dolphin encounters on our charters. This section of coastline sits at the southwestern tip of continental Europe, where Atlantic currents bring rich feeding grounds close to shore. Dolphins follow the fish — and on this coast, the fish follow the current.
How Often Do You See Them?
Roughly one in three charters aboard Ocean Breeze results in a dolphin encounter. They are present in these waters year-round, with no single season dramatically outperforming another. The honest answer is that no skipper can guarantee a sighting — the ocean does not work to a schedule — but the waters between Lagos and Sagres give you as good a chance as anywhere along the Algarve coast.
What Does an Encounter Actually Look Like?
On 31st July last year, a group of approximately 30 common dolphins found Ocean Breeze in open water between Lagos and Sagres. They stayed with the boat for several minutes, bow riding — using the pressure wave created by the hull to surf at speed alongside the boat. Rob filmed the encounter both above and below the waterline, capturing the pod at close range in crystal clear Atlantic water.
It is the kind of moment that reminds you why sailing, rather than motoring, is the finest way to experience this coastline. A sailing yacht moving under canvas is quieter, smoother and less disruptive than a powerboat — and dolphins, in our experience, respond to that.
Can You Swim With Them?
We do not enter the water during dolphin encounters — approaching or swimming with wild dolphins is discouraged and, in some circumstances, restricted under Portuguese maritime regulations. The encounter is best experienced from the deck or the bow, where the dolphins will often come within arm's reach on their own terms.
How to Give Yourself the Best Chance of a Dolphin Encounter
Choose a sailing charter over a powerboat — the quieter approach makes a difference
The open water section of a full-day or 5-hour charter gives the most time in dolphin habitat
Morning departures tend to encounter calmer sea conditions, which makes spotting easier
Keep an eye on the horizon — dolphins often announce themselves with a visible splash before they reach the boat
If a dolphin encounter is high on your list for your visit to the Algarve, our full-day charter covers the most productive stretch of coastline and offers the best chance of finding them.
